Four Ways to Make Your Room Feel Good

Can you believe it? It’s already the year 2024! 2023 has gone by so fast and it was such a productive year. Fulfilling and rewarding 2023 was, however, 2024 seems like it’s going to be a more promising year and we couldn’t be more excited! The air feels charged with a positive energy– people are hopeful, excited to dive into new experiences, and plans of making 2024 the best year yet are already in full swing. This is the year where you regain balance in your life and focus on what makes you feel good emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. With the hustle bustle of the lives we lead, it is important that you yourself is well-taken care of; no more putting yourself in the backseat! 2024 is the year of prioritising and focusing on things that make you feel good. Let this be our mantra for the rest of the year, shall we?

Naturally, a person’s behaviour is influenced by both internal and external factors. Internal factors pertain to feelings, emotions, and experiences summed up, while external factors refer to the environment where a person is exposed to on a daily or periodic basis. These predetermine the way a person responds and it is important to check these factors and gauge if these are beneficial to your overall well-being or not. The way to do it is to address them smartly– the things you can control, at least.

Like previously mentioned, external factors are factors outside of yourself. Family, peers, the space you live in, among other things. While you have no control over these aspects, let’s focus on the thing you can control: which is your space. We all have our own rooms that we refer to as our safe havens. It serves as our boundary from the outside world and it is solely for our own use and nobody else’s. Remember our 2024 mantra of making ourselves feel good? This makes for the perfect starting point.

Now, how do we exactly make our room feel ‘good’? Feeling ‘good’ could mean differently for people since we all have different interests and mindsets. Are you the type who wants to wake up to nothing but your bed and TV, with none of your work materials facing your view? Or are you the type who wants to be motivated first thing in the morning?

Determine The Space You Want

● Assess your routine. What is the first thing you do upon waking up? Do you like to take your time, or do you like to make every minute count?

● How do you see your space? Do you see it as a resting pod, or a place where you brainstorm with yourself and be motivated and inspired?

● Are you an introvert, or an extrovert that is all about entertaining guests and family every weekend?

The thing is, humans are complex creatures so it’s only normal if you answer yes to all of the questions above. You can be motivated and brimming with energy today and you could be a total couch potato watching back to back Netflix episodes tomorrow. It’s human nature after all. The way to make your spaces feel good is to properly designate areas and abide by the purpose it serves.

Four Ways to Make Your Room Feel Good

1. Break the showcase look of your homes by adding elements that bring warmth

We get it, your interior space looks like it deserves a full-page spread on a monthly Interior Design magazine after you spent months curating and designing your space, but it is also completely okay to break the “perfect” look of your home. Adding elements that feel right to you is a good way to make your space have this personal essence, one that stirs warmth and cosiness into your being.

1.1 A perfect example would be displaying your family photo album alongside your books on your coffee table so you could easily have access. Having it within reach sparks nostalgia and fondness that feels warm and fuzzy, and it is such a simple way to bring homeliness into your space instead of just storing them into forgotten boxes.

1.2 Bringoutthedecoryouscoredalongyourjourney, despitehowunaestheticitlooks. You can balance them out with decor that looks more appealing and style them in a way that creates balance. Items like these are holders of memories and tied with it is a story on how you acquired them, therefore inducing happy memories and a reminder of that particular event in your life.

2. Elements that makes you feel cozy

2.1 Do you know those chunky knit blankets that look absolutely cozy where you just want to bundle yourself in them? You can drape this throw blanket atop your sofas, armchairs or your bedspreads and it easily serves as a functional accent piece. It is eye-catching because of its chunky, eclectic form, and it also makes for a great cuddling companion for your restful weekends.

2.2 Known as the finest cotton in the world, you may want to consider linen that are made from 100% Egyptian cotton. You might be thinking, what difference does it make when you use Egyptian cotton versus regular cotton fibers that are already widely available in the market? Unlike ordinary cotton, Egyptian cotton boasts long fibers that contribute to its exceptional quality cementing it as a luxury item. Research shows that we spend about one third of our lives sleeping, so investing in quality bed sheets is a must since it improves the quality of our sleep, therefore improving the quality of our lives.

3. Designating areas

Rooms are built for a reason. Areas provide boundaries and not only it separates the physical aspects, but there’s also separate functions. As much as you’d like to work in your living room with the TV blasting in the background while you’re in the middle of a zoom call, doing so would affect your productivity and it is not helpful at all. Abide by the purpose of the room by making sure to use it only for the function it serves. Bedrooms are strictly for resting, dining areas for dining, offices for work, and the list goes on.

Have a clean-as-you-go mindset

Done using the research materials you used for your project? Store them away immediately. Do not let it crowd your space since a messy environment equals a messy mind. Research shows that a cluttered space is linked to negative emotions whereas organized spaces contribute positively to our overall well-being. Or if you aren’t able to store them right away, you can also schedule a weekly cleanup to maintain your spaces in top shape.

Allot time to rearrange your space in a way that benefits you. While we don’t have complete control over the other things in our lives, we do have control over things like our spaces, the home we live in and the mindset and habits we bring. Have an amazing year ahead, everyone!
