How to Choose The Interior Design Style for your Home

Choosing the Right Interior Design Style for your Home

A home is a safe haven. It is a shelter— a personal, intimate space which fulfills the physiological and safety aspects in Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. It serves as our recluse from the outside environment that we do our best to model our homes appropriate to our needs. Arranging it based on how we function as individuals is only innate, as we make sure our spaces fit us like a glove. Indeed, it is safe to say that a home is a worthwhile investment that will never have you second guessing. And like any other investment, we do the necessary research required in designing our homes– and by research I meant scrolling through Pinterest for hours on end. Relatable? I know. So how do we choose the right Interior Design style for our beloved spaces?

Determine the Occupants

The first thing to consider is the occupants. Are you living alone? Or with a partner? Are plans about having a bigger family on the horizon? It is best to ask yourself these questions now rather than later. You might be asking if it would make a difference on how your home would look and yes, it does. A bachelor’s home looks entirely different to a family man’s, and a minimalist sees accessories as nothing but a cluttered mess.

Another thing to consider is whether your home is for the long term or not. You wouldn’t want to splurge x amount of money on a space you don’t see yourself living in for years, would you? Especially with the economic situation today where prices spike and inflation soars, the best way to go on about it is to decidedly choose a certain style, one that really speaks to you and adjust it according to your needs. That way, you are able to get the most out of your investment.

As trends come and go, how would you know if your designed home transcends ever changing seasons? Here are four Interior Design styles that we think will always stand the test of time.

  • Hamptons Style

True to its namesake and inspired by the affluent scene of The Hamptons in Long Island, New York, Hamptons-style interiors focus on bringing a coastal flair to spaces by incorporating light colours, neutral shades, and hints of blue that overall exude a bright, calming atmosphere that is nostalgic of a beachfront. It is easy on the eyes and in its own way, reassuring, similar to what a coastal scene has us feeling every time we set our eyes on crystal blue waters.

  • Scandinavian / Minimalist

Scandinavian interiors are all about function– making every nook and cranny work for your needs without the need to rely on heavy ornamentation and decoration. There’s a concept called Essentialism– a principle that centers on focusing only on the essentials and eliminating those that are not. This concept is followed by the Scandinavian style where it zeroes in on the beauty of simplicity, and lets such simplicity stand out on its own. Scandi interiors is a clean combination of simple colours, simple yet striking furniture pieces, and maximizing natural light streaming from the windows and open floor plan spaces.

  • Classic

Classic by definition means a standard of excellence, one that is of recognized value. In the world of architecture and interior design, anything regarded as ‘Classic’ embraces the Greek and Roman principles of harmony and balance. Such a concept is reflected in interior design by making use of period elements like wall treatments (paneling, mouldings), intricate furniture details (carved legs and textured fabrics), and high quality materials fitting contemporary settings. It is done in a way that is subtle, yet full of character and pizzazz that makes homes look timelessly elegant. It is a clever mix of modern and traditional elements cohesively put together.

  • Glam / Luxury

Shying away from simplicity is Glam-style interiors. Inspired by the Art Deco flair and Old Holywood aesthetics, glam interior styles perfectly strike the balance between luxury and functionality. It is not conservative nor is it plain, presenting itself in a way that demands attention by subtly utilizing metal finishes, rich fabrics, and carefully-selected, high-end furniture pieces that ooze charisma and elegance. It brims with opulence and grandiosity, but still classy nonetheless.
